The cause of death of General Hospital actress Sonya Eddy has been revealed following her death earlier this week.
According to TMZ, the beloved soap star had experienced complications from a non-emergency surgery. Eddy’s friend, Tyler Ford, told the outlet the actress went in for the scheduled procedure on December 9 and was released two days later.
However, she began to feel unwell and returned to the hospital on December 15, where doctors discovered she had developed a serious infection that had spread.

The friend said on Monday Eddy was placed on life support but sadly died later that night. She was 55.
It was another friend, actress Octavia Spencer, who announced her passing on Instagram.

“My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her 💔🕊️,” Spencer wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the late actress.
“My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!”
US network ABC, home of General Hospital, has since released a statement in honour of Eddy’s contribution to the long-running soap.
“General Hospital is sad to confirm the passing of actress Sonya Eddy, who embodied her character … the tough but compassionate, head nurse, Epiphany Johnson … and immediately became a fan favorite and beloved member of our GH family when she joined the show in 2006,” it read.

The actress first joined the cast in 2006, starring in a total of 543 episodes. Her last appearance on the soap was in November 2020. From 2007 to 2008, she was also a regular cast member on the soap’s spin-off program, General Hospital: Night Shift.
The show’s “heartbroken” executive producer, Frank Valentini, also expressed his condolences in a separate post.
“The lights in the hub of the nurses’ station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set,” he wrote.
“On behalf of the entire GH cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed.”
