A mother of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims is furious Evan Peters won a Golden Globe for portraying the serial killer on Netflix and says the actor should have paid tribute to the lives that were stolen.
Shirley Hughes’ Tony Hughes, a Black man who was deaf and who could not speak, was murdered by Dahmer in 1991.
Shirley spoke to TMZ regarding Peters’ win for the Netflix series, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and said the actor should have used his acceptance speech to mention the families who are still suffering from Dahmer’s crimes.

Similarly, she suggested he say that Hollywood should put an end to telling stories which glorify high-profile killers.
“There’s a lot of sick people around the world, and people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame,” the grieving mother said.

“It’s a shame that people can take our tragedy and make money. The victims never saw a cent. We go through these emotions every day.”
Hughes has been a vocal critic of the Netflix series since it was first released in September last year. At the time, Hughes spoke to The Guardian and said she didn’t understand how a television program, dramatising the depraved murders, could be released.
According to the Associated Press, Shirley attended all of Dahmer’s criminal court proceedings.

Though Dahmer wasn’t thought to have money, in 1992, Hughes successfully won a civil court judgement which allowed her to intercept up to $10 million of any money offered to the serial killer, who would die in 1994, for movie, publication or television rights to his story.
The 85-year-old joined a chorus of other victims’ family and friends who opposed the show. The cousin of Dahmer victim Errol Lindsey, Eric Perry, took to Twitter to inform the public that his relatives only found out about the series when Netflix released it.

“To answer the main question, no, they don’t notify families when they do this… My family found out when everyone else did,” Perry wrote.
Lindsey’s sister, Rita Isbell, who is portrayed as calling Dahmer “Satan” in a series of courtroom scenes in the show, also wrote separately that the show felt “harsh and careless”.
