Jennifer Lopez has opened up about what it was really like to call off her wedding to Ben Affleck in 2004.
Speaking to interviewer Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, Lopez reflected on the moment that made headlines everywhere.
“Once we called off that wedding 20 years ago, it was the biggest heartbreak of my life, and I honestly felt like I was going to die,” she said.

Lopez pointed to her 2002 album, This Is Me… Then, which she wrote while she was wrapped up in the best parts of her relationship with Affleck.
The singer is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album this month – an album she never toured or performed because of her pain.
“It was a part of me then that had to put away to kind of move on and survive. It was a survival tactic [to not perform this album], for sure,” she added.
Lopez then said that after the break-up, she hit a creative block.
“I didn’t make music in that way that I did in 2002 until now… it set me on a spiral for the next 18 years where I just couldn’t get it right,” she admitted. “But now, 20 years later, it does have a happy ending. It has the most, would-never-happen-in-Hollywood ending.”
After linking back up with Affleck in 2021, Lopez said she suddenly felt re-inspired.

“The same thing happened where I felt so inspired and so overtaken with emotion that [the music] was just pouring out of me.”
Earlier she described the This Is Me… Then album as capturing “a time where I fell in love with the love of my life.”

Now the couple, who finally got married this year – first in Vegas, and then in a very private but lavish ceremony at Affleck’s 87-acre Georgia estate – are wrapped up in love again.
“True love does exist and some things do last forever. And that’s real. I want to put that message out to the world,” Lopez said.
